From these studies a model of severe storms (the Browning SR model) was advanced. However, while the Browning SR model evidently applies to an important category of severe storms, there are many other types which it does not explain. Since these storms presumably also contain an updraft, it is only reasonable to expect them to exhibit a weak-echo region also, though not necessarily in the form of a cone-shaped vault. This study has been aimed at this aspect of severe storm research, in an attempt to increase our understanding of various types of severe storms.

A. ]. CHISHOLM NovEMBER 1973 29 this respect, it provides the location of the updraft summit. The visual storm anvil and the low reflectivity plume structure are indicative of the direction of storm outflow at the storm top since they consist of ice particles with relatively low fall speeds which are carried downwind in the storm outflow. 5) COMPUTED UPDRAFTS AND MID- AND HIGH-LEVEL WINDS. The computed updraft obtained from the LMA model may be used with the relative wind structure as an independent source of evidence in deducing the airflow.
