The system contains as variables the letters “p”, “q”, “r”, “s”, …; and as constants the symbols “–”, “•”, “∨”, “⊃” and “≡”. Constants and variables can be combined to form truth-functional formulae. A truthfunctional formula in any expression can be obtained by either writing “–” before any variable, or by writing any one of the constants with a variable on each side of it. Formulae obtained in this way are simple, for example, “–q”, and “p ⊃ q”, and these may be used to obtain complex formulae.
To preclude any ambiguity, there is the common but “clumsy” use of brackets. Thus –p ∨ (q • r) –[p ∨ (q • r)] (–p ∨ q) • r are ways of establishing which interpretation is intended. Strawson will economize the use of brackets by ranking constants in an order of precedence, namely “≡”, “⊃”, “∨”, “•” and “–”. In this system, brackets always override precedence between constants, but in the absence of guiding brackets, precedence among constants prevails. Thus the common “p ⊃ (q ∨ r)” can now be written more simply as “p ⊃ q ∨ r”.
None of this is a call by Strawson for an elimination of “⊇” from the logician’s vocabulary. The symbol has its 27 Peter Strawson convenience, but it is useful if we continue to bear in mind its limitations and its possible misinterpretations. There is a still further factor that also limits what formal logic can do. When the logician chooses the patterns for his representative rules, he chooses common uses drawn from ordinary language. He then makes that common use serve as the standard use because he cannot allow ambiguity within his system.
